1/43 320 Turbo Kraus HiFi 2° Division 2 DRM Norisring 1980 – Hans Joachim Stuck
German Deutsche Rennsport Meisterschaft and its spectacular Group 5 cars had obviously reached their peak when Ford, BMW and Lancia entered their ultimate aerodynamic evolutions in division 2 of the 1980 racing season. The tiny 1.4 litre turbocharged engines had reached 450 hp by then and the few front running turbo cars were far ahead of the normally aspirated 2-litre cars. After a disastrous year with ATS Hans Joachim Stuck had left Formula 1 for good and concentrated on Schnitzer’s super low line BMW 320 Turbo and the German Championship.
The 1980 Norisring Division 2 race will stick in our memories forever mainly because of Hans Heyer’s horrific crash in lap 6 when the left front brake disc exploded and the Fruit of the Loom Lancia rolled numerous times to end in a total wreckage, the driver escaping unhurt. After this incident Stuck in the Kraus HiFi BMW started chasing the leader Harald Ertl in his Sachs Zakspeed Capri Turbo but was stuck in second position when the race was red flagged after a cloudburst. By the end of the year Stuck was runner-up in his BMW.
