27. Surtees TS14

S4003 Surtees TS14 No.31 British GP 1973 – Jochen Mass

The TS14 was the first model that John Surtees was constructing completely on his own. But it was also the car with the least race operations. To be precise it were only two. Surtees drove the race car at the Italian GP in 1972 and was ending up his active career. Tim Schenken was driving the US GP in the same year. But in both races there were some malfunctions on the car. For Surtees there was a problem with the fuel supply and Schenken’s TS14 had a broken suspension. Sir John decided to not use the error-prone TS14 anymore and gave the order to rework it for the season 1973 where it started as TS14A. But the season 1973 became a nightmare for the most of the time. The Firestone tires caused extreme vibrations. That’s the reason why a lot of suspensions, stub-axleas and half-shafts broke down. Mike Hailwood who was a cheerful nature normally, had not a lot of reasons to smile. Participating in 15 GP, he couldn’t achieve one single championship point. At the GP of Silverstone the drivers Hailwood and Carlos Pace got support from the German Jochen Mass.

After the practice the Formula 1 rookie from the Bavarian village Dorfen was located at the 6th starting row next to Pace and behind Hailwood. But the race was not long for him. After the first round the snow-white Surtees was involved in the biggest pile-up of the Formula 1 which was caused by Jody Scheckter in the “Woodcote”. Nine vehicules, including Mass, were involved. The fast retirement at the first GP was followed by a second race at the Nürburgring three weeks later. There Mass was doing a good race and finished with P7 (after starting from P15), wherefore he would receive some points today (at that time only until P6). At the home GP Mass race car was not completely white anymore. The Colone-based “Auto Zeitung” (car magazine) was sponsoring their fosterling. The last GP for Surtees in this year Mass was racing in Watkins Glen, but he retired with an engine break down.
